Newborn Session Prep Guide

Tips for a sleepy, safe, and successful newborn photoshoot. Following these steps helps us create the beautiful portraits you'll cherish forever.

Preparing Your Baby

A sleepy baby is a happy baby during a photoshoot! The goal is to have them as milk-drunk and tired as possible when you arrive.

  • Interaction is Key: Try to keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before you leave for the studio. A bath, playtime, or just talking to them can help.
  • Feeding Time: Please feed your baby right before you leave home, or plan to give them a full feeding as soon as you arrive at the studio. A full belly is the #1 key to a sleepy, content baby.
  • Dress for Success: Dress your baby in a simple, loose-fitting sleeper or outfit that is easy to remove without disturbing them too much. Avoid anything that has to be pulled over their head.
  • Pacifier: Even if you don't plan on using one regularly, we highly recommend bringing a pacifier (dummy) to the session. It can be a lifesaver for soothing the baby between poses.
What to Expect at the Studio

Our studio is a warm and welcoming space designed for you and your baby's comfort.

  • It's Warm!: The studio will be kept very warm (around 26-28°C) to keep your baby comfortable while they are undressed. Please dress in layers so you can stay comfortable too.
  • Session Flow: We will handle everything! I have years of experience in safely posing and handling newborns. Your job is to relax, put your feet up, and enjoy the experience. We have a comfortable lounge area for you.
  • Props & Outfits: Our studio is fully stocked with a wide variety of high-quality props, wraps, bonnets, and headbands. We will have everything we need, so you don't need to bring any outfits unless there is a special heirloom you'd like to include.
For Parents & Siblings

Your comfort is important, and so is creating beautiful family portraits.

  • What to Wear: For parents, we recommend solid, neutral-colored clothing. Simple is best. Black, white, cream, or grey t-shirts/tops are perfect. Avoid busy patterns or logos.
  • For Siblings: Simple, neutral clothing is also best for siblings. We want the focus to be on the connection and the new baby. We typically photograph siblings at the beginning of the session so they can leave with a grandparent or other family member if they get restless.
  • Bring Extras: Please bring extra milk/formula, diapers, and wipes. It's also a good idea to bring snacks and drinks for yourselves (and any older siblings).
  • Relax: Newborn sessions are slow-paced and led by the baby. Don't stress if the baby is fussy or needs to eat. We have plenty of time and patience. This is a special moment, and we are here to capture it for you.
